A tension headache may very well be the most prevalent kind of headache in America today. Caused by stress, it often feels as if your head is in a vise. A tension headache creates a dull, throbbing ache or sometimes a sharp throbbing pain, usually on both sides of the head at once (compare to the single-side focus of a migraine or a cluster headache). A headache is brought on by stress or sometimes sensory overexposure (bright lights, loud noises, etc.) but generally only if the sensory overexposure is unwanted. In other words, you won't get a tension headache from speakers blasting if you're the one doing the blasting.

Because headaches are caused by stress, the best way of getting rid of them is to get rid of the stress. An hour or two of low lights, soft music, and splashing water nearby are the best cures for the tension headache. Over the counter medications are also available and usually have a good effect on headaches. But if you prefer not to go the 'dope me silly' way, there are other homeopathic methods for curing or relieving headaches. The most obvious is to relieve the stress; low lights and soft music. If you don't have that much time, it may help to take a hot shower. The heat and the water will help to relax you; headaches are caused by tense muscles as much as anything else. A hot shower will work wonders for tense muscles, and, through that, for headaches.

Additionally, one good way of taming the tension headache is to go for a walk, for thirty minutes to an hour. It need not be brisk; even an amble would do. Avoid noisy areas and those with heavy traffic; noise and fumes tend to aggravate headaches. Walking gets your blood flowing faster, your heart beating stronger, and your lungs pumping more air, all of which have the combined effect of clearing out your system and easing away the headache.
