Trying to list cluster headache cause origins may be a bit of a misnomer, as scientists and medical practitioners disagree on a cluster headache cause, and most will tell you that the cause simply isn't known. However, far more relevant for the average person who suffers from cluster headaches, there are certain triggers that may set off a cluster headache, and which can be avoided. There are also some medications which may or may not be effective in treating symptoms. People who smoke or drink may be more at risk for cluster headaches. But, sadly, the cluster headache cause remains a mystery.

Not only may people who consume alcohol in any quantity be more likely to experience cluster headaches, alcohol itself can sometimes act as a trigger. If you persistently experience headaches after drinking small or moderate amounts of alcohol, it might be as well to give it up for a while and see if the headaches lessen or disappear altogether. If they do, you may need to continue to avoid alcohol, or weigh the pros and cons of alcohol versus headaches.

Cluster headaches can also be triggered by glare. Bright lights should be avoided when possible if you suffer from cluster headaches. Wear sunglasses when it's bright and sunny outside, and wear sunglasses when driving if it's bright or sunny. Many people who remember to wear sunglasses on the beach or in the yard to protect their eyes forget that driving on a bright day, staring at reflective road with no shade for long periods of time, can be even worse than spending a bit of time in the garden. It can certainly be worse for cluster headaches. If you are prone to cluster headaches, always wear sunglasses when driving!

Even if the cluster headache cause is unknown, there are medications that may help treat the symptoms. It's important to note that these will not treat a cluster headache cause; only symptoms. But they may be able to help you function normally again. Most OTC medicines are ineffective against cluster headaches because the medications take so long to work that the headache is gone by the time they start working. Ask your doctor about medications that may be right for you.
